Two fraternities at Penn State were placed on interim suspension in late January for alleged violations of university policies, according to an updated list on a university website.

Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, 351 E. Fairmount Ave., State College, has been on interim suspension since Jan. 21 and Delta Chi Fraternity, 424 E. Fairmount Ave., State College, was put on interim suspension effective Jan. 27. Both appear as being on interim suspension on the university’s student affairs website.

It’s unclear what led to the interim suspensions. A Penn State spokesperson said they could not provide additional information.

“Both fraternities have been placed on interim suspension while the Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Response investigate serious allegations of misconduct. As these are active investigations, we cannot provide additional details at this time,” a spokesperson wrote in an email to the Centre Daily Times.

When fraternities or sororities are under interim suspension, their activities and privileges are temporarily halted by Penn State or their national governing bodies due to allegations of serious violations of Penn State policies, local laws or organizational standards, according to the university’s student affairs site. During the interim suspension, the organizations are not allowed to hold meetings, events or recruitment activities, the site states, and the members must comply with the imposed restrictions.

What frats are currently on suspension?

A number of fraternities are listed on the student affairs site as suspended by Penn State in agreement with their inter/national organizations:

  • Beta Theta Pi Fraternity: Suspended permanently for hazing violations.
  • Delta Sigma Iota Fraternity, Inc.: Suspended through May 29 for hazing, alcohol and/or drug violations, and other university policy violations.
  • Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.: Suspended through Sept. 11, 2027 for hazing violations.
  • Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.: Suspended through spring 2029 for hazing violations.
  • Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc.: Suspended through spring 2028 for hazing violations.

Fraternities that are suspended by Penn State but still maintain an active charter from their inter/national organization:

  • Acacia Fraternity: Suspended through spring 2029 for hazing violations.
  • Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity (Skulls): Suspended through fall 2027 for hazing violations.
  • Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity (PIKE): Suspended through fall 2025 for failure to comply with a directive or condition, alcohol and/or drug violations and other University policy violations.
  • Sigma Pi Fraternity: Suspended through spring 2029 for hazing violations.

Those last four fraternities, plus others, are unrecognized chapters, meaning they are actively disaffiliated from Penn State and are operating without approval or recognition from the university, the site states. They cannot participate in any activities through the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and are not allowed to participate in any Penn State function as a group, like Thon or Homecoming, for example.

“Penn State’s ability to respond to concerns with these groups is incredibly limited,” the site states. “While individual students can be held accountable under the Student Code of Conduct, the collective group is not held to the same standards, limiting the effectiveness and impact of potential sanctions or disciplinary actions.”

The majority of the listed fraternities began operating as independent chapters after being suspended due to hazing, alcohol and/or drug violations, or other policy violations.

The unrecognized chapters include Acacia Fraternity, Delta Phi Fraternity, Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Inc., Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity (PIKE), Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity (Skulls), Sigma Chi Fraternity, Sigma Pi Fraternity and Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
