Centre County fire crews respond to fire in Penn State fraternity house. What we know

Fire crews are on the scene of building fire in a Penn State fraternity house, with the university urging people to avoid the area.

Alpha Fire Company was called to the Alpha Zeta fraternity at 360 N. Burrowes Road on the University Park campus, near Rec Hall, at about 3:45 p.m. Thursday. Heavy smoke was visible in the area, with flames coming from the roof of the building.

In an alert to the university community, Penn State urged people to avoid the area on North Burrowes between Curtin Street and Pollock Road. Roads are closed in the area.

At about 5:30 p.m., heavy smoke remained in the area, as firefighters continued to work inside and outside the building.

Alpha, Pleasant Gap, Boalsburg, Port Matilda and Undine fire companies were among those on scene, along with Centre LifeLink and University Ambulance Service.
