PSU to discontinue credit classes in Lewistown

Penn State will no longer offer for-credit courses in Lewistown, effective 2017.

According to the university, the decision was made due to decreasing enrollment and declining revenue.

The Lewistown Center, however, will continue to operate as a location for Penn State Cooperative Extension programs and consulting services from the Penn State Small Business Development Center.

In a release, university officials said, “The students currently enrolled in courses at the Lewistown Center will receive assistance from Penn State to help them with potential paths to degree completion.”

Students will have options through other Penn State locations or online through Penn State World Campus.

“In July 2011, Penn State’s Academic Program and Administrative Services Core Council asked Outreach and Online Education (OOE) to carefully review the cost effectiveness of offering courses in Lewistown. The goal of the council was to identify new ways to maintain academic excellence while helping Penn State become a more efficient and effective institution. OOE leadership gave the center additional time to increase enrollments. Since that time, enrollments steadily declined and course offerings were routinely canceled, causing further disruption to students seeking to complete their degrees. With enrollments remaining low, the decision was made to implement the council’s recommendation and discontinue credit courses at the Lewistown Center,” the university release said.

Lewistown Center students can call 717-248-9618 for further assistance.
