Second arrest made in Snyder Hall assault

A second arrest has been made and new details have emerged in an assault that was caught on camera in the elevator of a Penn State dormitory.

Kylan Levi Barry, 19, of Enola, was arraigned before District Judge Steven Lachman on Thursday. Barry is charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespassing, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct.

“I think that a lot of times people don’t think before they act. People should exercise good judgment as these are life altering charges, any time that you have this level of assault,” Penn State police Detective Ryan Olson said Friday.

According to police, Barry was visiting friends, including co-defendant David Stepanyan, 19, from Kutztown University, when the assault took place.

Camera footage shown at Stepanyan’s preliminary hearing Wednesday depicts the two men entering Snyder Hall, where the victim lived.

The video is more than 18 minutes long.

According to court documents, the victim, a third male, was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for evaluation. A CT scan determined he suffered a nasal fracture and medical staff noted numerous cuts to his face and head.

When asked about the condition of the victim, Olson said that “he’s recovering.”

“We are very appreciative for the tips that we received and the public’s assistance is always appreciated,” Criminal Investigations Lt. Stephanie Brooks said.

Olson agreed.

“I think it’s important to recognize those that were able to provide information,” he said. “We encourage people to come forward. That information is what led to an arrest.”

Barry is free on $75,000 unsecured bail.

Barry’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
