Thon child and Penn State student Madison “Maddie” Hill, 19, died Wednesday at her home in Dover Township.

She fought cancer three times in 11 years.

Maddie became a Penn State student and Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon volunteer after years of benefiting from the student-run philanthropy. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2005.

Katie Bush, of Lancaster, recalled meeting Maddie at Thon 2007.

Bush, whose sister Sydney is a cancer survivor, connected with Maddie and often called and texted her.

“A lot of people could have gone into a dark place and ignored reality and what was happening around them,” Bush said. “Maddie had a great attitude. She was an amazing person. When she suffered, she didn’t make anything about herself. She always turned the conversation around to how you were doing.”

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held in Maddie’s honor at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Church of the Open Door, 8 Carlisle Court in York. Viewings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, both at the church.

Maddie is the daughter of Scott and Dawn Hill, the sister of Travis Hill and the granddaughter of Samuel and Shirley Hill and of David and Beverly Lee.

At Dover Area High School, she played varsity soccer for four years, made the National Honor Society and was the Mini Thon chair.

She was a member of the Blue and White Society and Thon family relations co-chair at Penn State York.

The Hill family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Four Diamonds Fund, Jedediah Smith Foundation, Miranda’s Smile Foundation or Jeff Musser Foundation.
