Family steps out of Napa restaurant as car crashes into it
A woman and two kids were leaving a restaurant in Napa, California, on Monday when a car suddenly slammed into the building — nearly hitting all three of them, video shows.
The Napa Police Department posted footage of the crash on Facebook on Tuesday, describing the incident as a “VERY close call.”
“This scary video is a good reminder to always be aware of your surroundings,” police said. “Only minor injuries were reported when it was all said and done.”
The driver lost control of the car about 5 p.m. and careened into the front of Villa Corona Mexican restaurant in Bel Aire Plaza, police wrote on Instagram. The impact sent furniture in the unoccupied outdoor dining area flying, video shows. The crash also impacted a nearby block wall, according to police.
Napa authorities said the 60-year-old driver and one of the children — just 2 or 3 years old — were taken to a hospital, though their injuries were minor, the Napa Valley Register reports.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Villa Corona owner Fernando Villasenor, whose security footage caught the crash, the Register reports. “I was just so grateful that they started skipping and running.”
At the beginning of the 13-second video, a woman exits the restaurant carrying a plastic bag and holds the door open for her two small children. The kids walk out the door, but soon begin skipping — and then, as the two grab their heads, they run and duck while the car plows into the building, video shows.
“It looked like a movie,” said Villa Corona employee Vivian Saldivar, who witnessed the crash, according to the Register. “I was like, ‘It’s either a tornado or an earthquake.’”
A photo posted by the police in the aftermath of the crash shows strings of lights hanging from the restaurant, chairs strewn on the sidewalk, and the ground littered with what appears to be broken terracotta pots and soil.
Villasenor said he expects to spend around $10,000 to repair chairs, tables, planters and umbrellas involved in the wreck, the Register reports. Police said the crash didn’t appear to be the result of medical problems and said no arrests have been made, according to the newspaper.
