Pill bottles full of bed bugs were left at a Walmart, PA cops say. Some escaped

Police in Pennsylvania want to know who released bed bugs in a local Walmart.

A Walmart manager in Edinboro called police on Thursday after an employee found a closed pill bottle full of live bed bugs in the pocket of a jacket for sale in the boys’ department, Go Erie reported.

The next day, another bottle — full of dead bugs — was found on the floor of the men’s department near the belt section, according to Erie News Now.

Officials contacted representatives from Ecolab — a hygiene and energy technology company — who inspected the store and found several bed bugs crawling in the men’s changing room, the Meadville Tribune reported. Officials haven’t said how many bugs were found.

Police are investigating to determine who released the bugs, Erie News Now reported.

Bed bugs are often found in hotels, dorms and apartments, and feed on the blood of people and animals while they sleep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While they don’t spread disease, bites from the small bugs — which range in size from 1mm to 7mm — can cause itching.

Bed bug infestations can be hard to stop because bite marks emerge days after a person is bitten, the CDC says.

Signs you have a bed bug infestation include finding bed bug exoskeletons, bed bugs in the folds of sheets and rusty colored spots on furniture caused by the bugs’ blood-filled feces, according to the CDC.
