19,000 cases of noodles got recalled. A packaging problem can have serious consequences

Another packaging error endangering people with a food allergy caused the recall of 19,938 cases — not packages, cases — of high-fiber Ronzoni Smart Taste Extra-Wide Noodles.

As explained by manufacturer Riviana Foods in its FDA-posted recall notice, although the Ronzoni noodles are egg noodles, the packaging doesn’t mention that anywhere. That’s a conspicuous absence in the ingredient listing that people with food allergies check religiously.

Egg as an undeclared allergen isn’t a problem for those who neither have an egg allergy nor might be serving food to someone with an egg allergy. But, as the notice states, “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious allergic reaction if they consume this product.”

Riviana said it’s received one customer complaint, but knows of no allergic reactions.

This covers 12-ounce bags of Ronzoni Smart Taste Extra-Wide Noodles with manufacturing code Nos. MAR3022H, MAR3122H, JUN0422H, JUN0522H, JUL2422H, JUL2522H and UPC code No. 71300 05008. You can return the bags to the store for a full refund.

Those with questions can call Riviana at 800-730-5957, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
