Sunken boat discovered after life jackets wash ashore on New Jersey beach, police say
Several life jackets washed ashore and were scattered along the sands of a beach in New Jersey — leading officials to find a sunken boat nearby, authorities said.
The U.S. Coast Guard and state police were called to investigate and they began searching for a potential boat “in distress” beyond the shores of Wildwood Crest in Cape May County the morning of April 5, state police said in a statement.
They soon discovered a sunken vessel, according to state police and the U.S. Coast Guard Station Cape May.
“The owner was quickly located and it was confirmed that there were no injuries and all parties are accounted for,” state police wrote while adding that they’re investigating the incident.
Photos shared by the Coast Guard on Facebook partially show a boat sitting underneath the water.
A widely liked New Jersey-based Facebook page, which calls itself a “Wildwood, NJ Fan Page,” reported “roughly 10 life jackets washed up on shore this morning” in Wildwood on April 5. The page wrote that it notified the Coast Guard and provided updates on the matter throughout the day.
Coast Guard public affairs spokesperson Lt. Matthew Childs confirmed to McClatchy News that an individual observed several life jackets and debris along the beach, reported it to the agency and shared the find on the Facebook page called “Watch The Tramcar Please.”
The page’s name refers to a tramcar that operates on the Wildwood boardwalk adjacent to the beach.
“We’re glad it all ended well,” a post on the Facebook page said after learning that “everyone is fine.”
Wildwood is in southern New Jersey roughly 100 miles south of Trenton.
