A 3-year-old girl was bitten by a rattlesnake in California while helping her father take out the trash, news outlets report.

The toddler, Alice Germar, was barefoot on the driveway of her Butte Creek Canyon home in Chico when the snake bit her on the foot last Thursday, June 30, SFGate reported. She was taken to Enloe Medical Center to be given anti-venom and was later flown to UC Davis for follow-up treatment.

“She was in a lot of pain for a little bit. It was hard for her to calm down,” Alice’s mother, Tia Germar, told CBS Sacramento.

Alice was released from the hospital on Sunday, July 3, and is “happy to be back in her princess dresses and out of the hospital gown,” Action News Now reported.

The girl’s mother told the outlet that the family will always wear shoes outside in the future and be more cautious of their surroundings.

While the odds of being bitten by a rattlesnake are low, there are about 300 cases reported to the California Poison Control System annually. They advise parents to supervise children while they are outside, especially in wooded areas where the snakes live. If you are bitten by a rattlesnake, CPCS advises to seek immediate medical attention.

Chico is about 90 miles north of Sacramento.
