When is the ‘Jeopardy!’ Tournament of Champions — and who is competing? What to know
Season 38 of “Jeopardy!” was a historic year for champions, as five players recorded winning streaks of more than 10 consecutive games.
Now those five champions — plus 16 more — are set to compete in the upcoming Tournament of Champions.
This year’s Tournament of Champions is perhaps the most highly anticipated in the show’s history. All eyes will be on Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio and Mattea Roach, whose winning streaks from the regular season rank among the five longest in the show’s history.
Here’s what to know about this fall’s “Jeopardy!” Tournament of Champions.
When is the championship and who is hosting?
The quarterfinals of the Tournament of Champions begin Monday, Oct. 31, the show announced earlier this summer.
The entire schedule has not been revealed, but show producers said the finals could last anywhere from three to seven days depending on the outcome of the individual games.
While Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik have split hosting duties during regular seasons of the show, producers said in July it will be Jennings who hosts the Tournament of Champions.
What’s the format?
Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio and Mattea Roach, who all had significant winning streaks during regular-season play, have been given guaranteed spots in the semifinals of the tournament.
It’s a notable change in the tournament’s format, but “Jeopardy!” executive producer Michael Davies said the three have earned their way to the semifinals.
Schneider, who won 40 consecutive games, trails only Ken Jennings for the longest winning streak in the show’s history. Amodio won 38 straight and Roach was victorious for 22 in a row.
“None of these decisions were made lightly, but in some ways, we looked at Mattea and Matt and Amy. We had to draw a distinction between them and the rest of our competitors,” Davies said on the “Inside Jeopardy!” podcast.
The other 18 contestants, including two winners in the show’s first-ever Second Chance tournament, will compete in the quarterfinals.
Winners of those six quarterfinal matches will advance to the semifinals, where they will await Schneider, Amodio and Roach. Those nine players will play in three separate games — the three seeded players each in their own game — to determine the three finalists.
But in another shift from previous years, this year’s Tournament of Champions finals will feature a first-to-three format. This means whoever wins three games first will be crowned the champion.
“The finals can be anywhere from three to seven days depending on how long it takes a single player to reach three total wins,” Sarah Foss, “Jeopardy!” assistant director, said on the podcast.
