A 5-year-old’s mother, grandmother and aunt were arrested after the child was not breathing and could not be revived, California authorities said.
All three women were charged with one count of murder on Friday, Sept. 16, according to court documents, City News Service reported.
When deputies arrived at the Coachella home on Sept. 8 just before 8 p.m., “family members directed deputies to a child not breathing,” the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
First responders were unable to revive the child, officials said, and the 5-year-old died on scene.
“The identity of the deceased child will not be released,” the sheriff’s department said.
The child’s aunt, Miriam Silva, 38, of Coachella, surrendered to the Thermal Sheriff’s Station on Friday, Sept. 16, according to a news release from the Riverside Sheriff’s Department. She faces charges of murder and child endangerment.
The child’s mother, 37-year-old Vanessa Rangel, was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 13, and grandmother, 55-year-old Hilaria Rangel, was also arrested, the release said. At the time of arrest, the two each faced a charge of “child abuse resulting in great bodily injury and death.”
Vanessa and Hilaria Rangel each face additional child abuse charges relating to other children, according to court documents, the Desert Sun reported.
Per court documents, the pair inflicted “unjustifiable physical pain and mental suffering” on the children, News Channel 3 reported.
Coachella is about 130 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
