Mom’s discreet 911 call saves her, 3 kids after man kidnaps them, Nevada police say
A woman who’d been kidnapped managed to stay calm enough to plan a secret 911 call that saved her and her three children, police said.
When Nevada dispatchers received the open-line call from the woman in a moving car, they waited on the other end.
She eventually spoke quietly to the dispatcher, “stating she was inside of a vehicle and needed help, but was not able to provide many details,” the Mesquite Police Department said in an Oct. 12 news release.
That call shortly after midnight on Monday, Oct. 10, led to the rescue of a kidnapped woman and her three children, police said.
“They maintained their composure, and she bravely created a plan in her head to call for help as soon as she could,” police Chief MaQuade Chesley said in the news release.
The woman discreetly dialed 911 while in the car with Justin Junius Carter, 34, who is accused of trying to stab her and kidnapping her and her three children at knifepoint in Las Vegas, Mesquite police said.
From the 911 call, dispatchers were able to figure out the woman’s location, police said, and officers searched the area.
When officers stopped the car, they found the woman and her children and detained Carter, Mesquite police said.
“I am grateful the dispatchers and officers working that night were ready to jump into action without hesitation to find and rescue these victims from such a terrifying experience,” Chesley said.
Carter faces charges including four felony counts of second-degree kidnapping in violation of extended protection order, one felony count of domestic battery with the use of a deadly weapon, and one felony count of attempted murder, according to police.
Mesquite is about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
