‘Selfless’ Boy Scout dies in camp boating accident, officials say. ‘Unimaginable loss’
An 11-year-old Boy Scout died in a boating accident while at a camp in New Hampshire, officials and family said.
Marine Patrol said it responded to Manning Lake just after 2 p.m. on Friday, July 7, after receiving reports of a boating accident. At the scene, officials found a child who had been injured while out on a boat.
The child — identified as Keoni Hubbard by the Spirit of Adventure Council in a July 9 Facebook post — was found with fatal injuries and pronounced dead at the scene, the state’s Department of Safety said in a news release.
Keoni was at camp with his Boy Scout troop from Lexington, Massachusetts, according to the Spirit of Adventure Council’s post.
“Our hearts are forever broken by the loss of our Keoni. Beloved by his family and friends, Keoni’s spirit and empathy for others resonated with all who love and admire him,” the Hubbard family said in a statement shared by the Spirit of Adventure Council.
“Keoni was simply the best — a selfless child who truly found joy in the happiness of others,” the family said in its statement. “Our family appreciates the support of the community and respectfully asks that you respect our privacy as we mourn the unimaginable loss of our beloved Keoni.”

Social media users shared their condolences for Keoni.
“As a mother to two scouts who are both at camp as I write this, I send my deepest condolences to the Hubbard family, Troop 119 and the the community,” one Facebook user commented. “What a terrible tragedy.”
“Just crushing, my heart aches for the family and his fellow scouts and leaders. Praying for solace for all of them,” another person wrote on Facebook.
“Profoundly sad at this news. Thinking of the Hubbard family and the communities they touch that I know are hurting immeasurably,” a third person commented.
Manning Lake is in Gilmanton, which is about 90 miles north of Boston.
