Librarian waiting at bus stop hit and killed by suspected drunk driver, Oregon cops say
A youth librarian waiting at an Oregon bus stop was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver, according to police and library officials
Jean Diaz was at a bus stop July 15 near the Belmont Library in Portland, where she worked as a librarian, when she was struck, according to the Portland Police Bureau and Multnomah County Library officials.
Officers arrived on scene and found a “car rolled over onto the sidewalk and through a bus stop,” police said in a July 17 news release.
Diaz was pronounced dead on scene, according to police.
The driver, Kevin Michael Scott, 48, was not harmed and stayed on scene, police said.
Scott was later arrested on counts of first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving, according to police.
For the past eight years, Diaz was “a popular youth librarian” with Multnomah County Library’s Belmont branch, Vailey Oehlke, director of libraries, said in an emailed statement to McClatchy News on July 17.
“Jeanie radiated passion for her work with children and literacy,” Oehlke said. “In her many years with the library she touched the lives of innumerable young children and families across the county.”
Diaz’s husband described her as “such a presence” on Facebook.
“It’s impossible to describe here the feeling of profound loss,” her husband wrote on Facebook. “The shock is still real, but the outpouring of love so far has helped tremendously.”
