Deputy accused of trying to cover up colleague’s DUI crash, California officials say

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy faces charges that he tried to cover up a fellow deputy’s off-duty drunken driving crash, California prosecutors reported.

Deputy Gregory Davis, 54, drove to the Santa Clarita Valley crash in August 2022 and pulled his colleague from behind the wheel of the marked sheriff’s SUV, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

That deputy’s wife arrived to drive him home, prosecutors said.

Davis then tried to move the wrecked SUV, but a passing retired Los Angeles Police Department officer notified authorities of the crash, prosecutors said.

Davis did not initially identify himself as an off-duty deputy, the release said.

He faces charges including conspiracy to obstruct justice, giving false information to a peace officer and delaying and/or obstructing an investigation.

The other deputy, who worked in the department’s Special Enforcement Bureau, was charged earlier in the year in the drunken driving crash, prosecutors said.

“No one is above the law, especially not those that are sworn to uphold it,” District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement.
