A “sweetheart” dog was “put out with the trash” — then garbage collectors stepped in, a North Carolina shelter said.

A heartbreaking photo posted to Facebook shows Moe-Moe the dog was found in an animal crate, next to several garbage bags.

“Thankfully the guys that pick up the trash called Animal Control and were kind enough to give him some water with ice while they waited,” according to the post on a Facebook page called “Assisting the Hoke Co. Animal Shelter in Raeford, NC.”

“He’s such a sweetheart and I can’t imagine what he’s feeling right now,” officials wrote after the rescue.

Days after the Hoke County Animal Control and Shelter announced 4-year-old Moe-Moe would get a second chance, officials on Sept. 12 shared the news that the housetrained pup had been adopted.

“He’s already enjoying his big beautiful backyard and his new home,” the shelter wrote.

By the time of his adoption, Moe-Moe’s story had reached hundreds of social media users. The update made some emotional.

“I bawled my eyes out when I saw this original post and now I’m crying happy tears,” one person wrote on Facebook.

“I love this so much,” another person commented. “He deserves the best!”

Raeford is roughly 85 miles southwest of Raleigh.

The shelter hasn’t responded to McClatchy News’ requests for information about potential charges in this case.
