A litter of orphaned puppies was taken to a South Carolina shelter — then a stray dog accepted them as her own.

The Charleston Animal Society said the heartwarming twist happened after Moo the dog was found living on the streets of North Charleston. At the time, she was nursing her own 3-month-old puppies — named Chocolate Milk, Nesquick and Yoo-hoo.

The family of dogs received care at the shelter and eventually, Moo’s pups “were old enough to be separated from her so that they could be spayed and ready for adoption,” the animal rescue organization wrote Aug. 29 in a Facebook post.

Then, the day after Moo’s babies started preparing for new homes, the shelter said a “litter of five tiny homeless puppies (was) found on the streets and came in with no momma.”

A veterinarian wondered if Moo might raise the new group of puppies as her own — leading to news the shelter didn’t expect.

“Sweet Moo gladly accepted the orphan pups and is feeding and tending to them,” officials wrote in their online post, which included video of the dog getting her neck rubbed near five playful puppies.

”She is a gentle loving mom,” Charleston Animal Society officials said in an email to McClatchy News.

Some social media users couldn’t get enough of the cuteness, and the Facebook post garnered hundreds of reactions in about two weeks. As of Aug. 29, officials said “Moo and her puppies will head to a foster home until they are old enough to come back to the shelter for adoption.”
