An elk hunter broke his ankle and got stuck in a steep and rocky canyon in Washington, deputies said.

The 45-year-old man was hunting with his friends Oct. 28 in Joe Watt Canyon near Ellensburg, the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

He broke his ankle around 3 p.m. while walking along a slope, deputies said. His friends couldn’t help him out, so he called rescuers for help.

Eleven rescuers reached the man and helped him return to camp, deputies said.

Once there, a friend drove him to a hospital.

“(The man) and his friends were well prepared, but you have to get into rough country to hunt elk, and accidents happen,” deputies said in the post.

Ellensburg is in central Washington, about 110 mile southeast of Seattle.
