A deer hit a motorcyclist, throwing him onto a highway before another vehicle struck him, South Carolina officials said.

The motorcycle rider was flown to a hospital and later died from crash-related injuries, according to the Anderson County coroner’s office.

The crash was reported on S.C. Highway 247 in the Belton area, roughly 25 miles south of Greenville.

The man was riding his motorcycle north on the highway Nov. 9 when he “was struck by a deer, causing him to fall on the highway. The victim was then struck by another vehicle while his was in the roadway attempting to get off the highway,” officials wrote in a news release.

The man died two days later “due to multiple traumatic injuries secondary to blunt force trauma,” the coroner’s office said.

The man was identified as 35-year-old Troy James McConnell of Simpsonville, according to WSPA and WYFF.

The S.C. Highway Patrol, which reportedly is working with the coroner’s office to investigate the crash, didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Nov. 13.
