A 37-year-old man is going to prison after being accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in 2022, New Mexico officials said.

Days before the woman was found dead in Hobbs, Guadalupe Antonio Navarrete is accused of sending his girlfriend “threatening text messages,” according to a March 21 news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Mexico.

He is also accused of leaving a threatening voicemail “minutes before shooting her.”

Officers went to Navarrete’s home he shared with his parents and found the woman dead in the driver’s seat of a car with a gunshot wound to her head, according to court documents.

Navarrete told police he wasn’t at the residence when his girlfriend was found because he’d fled to Mexico that morning, documents stated.

Officials didn’t specify what led to the shooting.

McClatchy News reached out to Navarrete’s lawyers on March 22 for comment and did not immediately receive a response.

In March 2023, Navarrete pleaded guilty to cyberstalking resulting in life threatening bodily injury, prosecutors said.

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison followed by six years of supervised release, officials said in March 2024.

Hobbs is located near the state’s southeastern border with Texas.
