Retired postal worker in shock after learning of big lottery win. ‘Seems impossible’
A retired postal employee has been approaching a Maryland lottery game with the same strategy for years.
The Frederick man uses a mix of numbers, which includes family birthdays tossed in with “a number or two that’s been coming out a lot” to buy tickets for Bonus Match 5, the man said, according to a May 23 Maryland Lottery news release.
“It’s all random, I know, so I know there can’t be a pattern,” the man said in the release. “Sometimes, though, certain numbers do seem to pop up a lot.”
His go-to strategy proved successful “over the years,” however, it paled in comparison to its success in the May 18 drawing, wherein man’s strategy landed him the game’s top prize of $50,000, lottery officials said.
“I saw the numbers on the website and was shocked,” the man told lottery officials. “I refused to believe it.”
So much so, that even while claiming his fortune, the man’s doubt wouldn’t subside.
“This whole thing just seems impossible,” the man said.
The retiree said he hasn’t made any plans for his prize just yet, as his win is “not real” to him until he cashes his check.
Frederick is about a 50-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.
