Stunned dad just stares at ‘line of zeros’ on Maryland lottery ticket. ‘I was frozen’
A retired Maryland truck driver used to be a frequent lottery player.
When he was working, the Gaithersburg man would “buy an instant ticket whenever he fueled up the truck,” Maryland Lottery officials said in an Oct. 23 news release.
However, since his recent retirement, his playing has slowed.
“I hadn’t bought a ticket in a week, maybe two weeks,” the man told lottery officials. “Walking around the neighborhood, I see no Lottery stores, so it never occurs to me to buy one.”
But then, he went for a drive with his daughter.
“That’s when I saw the jackpot sign,” the man told lottery officials.
He asked his daughter to make a stop at a Check Cash Depot, where he spotted Gold Rush 7s Multiplier scratch-offs, lottery officials said.
After buying the $10 ticket, he scratched it in the store. It revealed a $100,000 win.
“I was in shock,” the man said. “I just stood there in the store staring at the ticket. I was frozen, I didn’t know what to do.”
Noticing her father’s frozen stature, she “peeked over his shoulder,” lottery officials said.
“Seeing the line of zeros of the prize he was pointing to, she quickly hustled him to the door,” lottery officials said.
They were soon home and celebrating with family, according to lottery officials.
Gaithersburg is about a 40-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.
