Pizza contaminated with THC is ‘mistakenly’ served at Wisconsin restaurant, officials say
A Wisconsin restaurant apologized after health officials found their pizza had been contaminated with THC.
From Oct. 22 to 24, Famous Yeti’s Pizza in Stoughton sold pizzas laced with THC, the active ingredient found in cannabis, Public Health Madison & Dane County said in an Oct. 24 news release.
THC is the chemical compound found in marijuana that often causes the “high” effect in people that ingest it, health officials said.
Health officials said a container of oil that’s used to make the dough tested positive for THC.
An investigation was prompted when Stoughton paramedics reported that several people, who had all eaten at Famous Yeti’s, were transported with comparable symptoms, public health officials said.
“They get really stoned,” co-owner Cale Ryan told the Wisconsin State Journal. “They get intoxicated from the THC, so I think it’s more alarming than anything to feel that way. It’s basically eating an edible, but without knowing.”
Ingesting THC can cause dizziness, sleepiness increased heart rate, anxiety, paranoia and other symptoms depending on how much is consumed, health officials said.
Now, those with leftover pizza are asked to throw it out.
“If you ate the pizza and are experiencing THC-related symptoms, please contact your health care provider or call 911 if your symptoms worsen,” Director of Environmental Health Bonnie Armstrong said in a statement.
In an Oct. 24 Facebook post, the restaurant said the pizza was “mistakenly prepared” with oil contaminated with Delta 9, which contains THC.
“It’s not normal to do, but you borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbor,” Ryan told the Wisconsin State Journal. “We went over to borrow some oil and grabbed the wrong one.”
Delta 9 is legal in Wisconsin, according to the state legislature. However, Recreational and medicinal marijuana is illegal in Wisconsin, according to JKippa Law.
The restaurant said the impacted products were destroyed.
Stoughton is about a 20-mile drive southeast from Madison.
