A Powerball player just missed a $58 million jackpot — but is still set to get richer in North Carolina.

The player bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the Dec. 16 drawing. Since the person spent an extra dollar on the Power Play option, their $50,000 prize doubled to $100,000, results show.

The winning numbers: white balls 9-30-33-57-61, with red Powerball 17.

The lucky $3 ticket — which matched four of the white balls and the red ball — was sold in the Lexington area, which is synonymous with a style of barbecue. The ticket came from Southmont Grocery, a roughly 35-mile drive south from Winston-Salem, a lottery spokesperson told McClatchy News in an email.

While the winner has a lot to celebrate, the person’s ticket was one number from scoring the larger jackpot prize. No one in the country hit the jackpot, which stood at an estimated $58 million the night of the drawing, according to the Powerball website.

As of 8:15 a.m. Dec. 17, the $100,000 North Carolina winner hadn’t claimed their prize. Powerball winners have about six months to cash in, rules show.

What to know about Powerball

To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
