A $1 lottery ticket turned into an “epic jackpot” prize in North Carolina.

David Webb had a lot to celebrate after learning the ticket he bought on Christmas Eve was worth $545,885, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote Dec. 27 in a news release.

Webb won big in the online game Wheel of Bonuses. He spent a dollar on his lucky ticket, which beat 1-in-31-million odds to score the progressive jackpot game’s top prize.

The lucky winner is from Stokesdale, a roughly 20-mile drive northwest from Greensboro. He claimed his “epic jackpot” prize and kept $390,308 after taxes, lottery officials said.

Webb wasn’t the only North Carolina lottery player to hit the jackpot just before the holidays. Two other lottery players couldn’t believe their luck when they got richer in December, McClatchy News and The Charlotte Observer reported.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
