A lottery winner has a “rude driver” in Maryland to thank for his prize, officials said.

He was driving back into Maryland from out of town when someone cut him off on the highway, lottery officials said in a Jan. 3 news release.

“Somewhat perturbed,” the Anne Arundel man noticed the license plate number — and played the numbers later that late December day in the lottery, officials said.

He stopped at a liquor store and “played the number straight for $1, pocketing 10 identical but separate tickets,” officials said.

“I figure if you’re going to play, you should play big,” he told officials while claiming his prize.

Then he went home and fell asleep, officials said. He didn’t find out he’d won $50,000 on each ticket until the next morning when he checked the lottery app.

He shared the good news of his $500,000 win with his mother, and said he plans to use some of the money to pay bills and invest the rest, officials said.

The man is from Glen Burnie, about a 12-mile drive south from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
