Georgia sees 90+ wild fires with one still burning 8,000 acres. Where?
It’s been a very busy few days for firefighters in Georgia as several wildfires have sparked, with a major one still burning a ton of land in the south. What’s going on? Here’s what we know:
How many Georgia wildfires are there?
Georgia Forestry Commission reported there were 52 wildfires between April 18 and 19, and on April 20 they responded to 46 new wildfires. This brings the total up to 98 wildfires burning 4,135 acres.
This does not include the Pineland Road fire in Clinch County which has grown to about 8,911 acres and, as of Tuesday morning, is only 10% contained.
Wildfire near me?
There have been reports of wildfires all over Georgia, but as of publication, most of the active ones are towards the south near cities like Valdosta. A map of the recent wildfires can be found at georgiafc.firesponse.com/public/.
Have there been any Georgia wildfire evacuations?
Georgia Forestry Commission Spokesperson Wendy Burnett said Tuesday morning that there are no active evacuations, but residents in two counties (Clinch and Echols) are on alert and have been advised to be ready to evacuate on a moment’s notice.
What caused the Georgia wildfires?
The Clinch County fire was caused by machine use. We don’t have causes for all of the recent wildfires, but Georgia Forestry has said the continued draught conditions will keep the risk of additional wildfires high.
How to prevent Georgia wildfires
Georgia Forestry said the No. 1 cause of wildfire is burning debris, especially yard leaf piles. When preparing for any type of outdoor burn, always keep a shovel, hose, and cell phone nearby, make sure you know your exit routes, and keep combustible materials out of a home’s perimeter.
