A congressman who serves part of Centre County tested positive for COVID-19 and is being treated at a military hospital outside Washington, D.C., according to a press release from his office.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Howard Township, tested positive Friday. He is vaccinated against the disease and is in “good spirits,” according to the release.

Thompson, 62, is being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center “out of an abundance of caution,” the release said.

Nearly 90 members of the House of Representatives and Senate have been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to GovTrack, a nonpartisan organization.

Breakthrough infections are expected. Those who are vaccinated are eight times less likely to be infected and 25 times less likely to experience hospitalization or death compared to those who are not vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
