The Centre County government will have a familiar face in one of its top leadership roles.

Centre County Commissioners unanimously approved the hiring of John Franek Jr. as county administrator during Thursday’s meeting. The role is currently held by Margaret Gray, who is retiring. Franek has been the county’s deputy administrator for a year.

“After many months of interviews, many fine candidates, we came to the unanimous conclusion that John would be a fantastic administrator to follow the legacy and the work that has been done by many people as county administrator and especially Margaret Gray … and we’re excited for a smooth transition, and really happy that John has accepted this position,” Commissioner Michael Pipe said during Thursday’s salary board meeting.

In a press release, Franek said he was humbled and honored for the opportunity.

“I am truly humbled by the opportunity to serve as the next Administrator of Centre County,” Franek said. “I am honored to continue working with the Commissioners and the entire county team in serving our community.”

Commissioner Steve Dershem said he’s excited to have Franek in this role and to have his leadership on many upcoming projects the commissioners have ahead.

“We have a lot of projects to accomplish; certainly his leadership will be valued,” Dershem said.

Commissioner Mark Higgins said Gray will be a hard act to follow and is looking forward to working with Franek and his many years of local government experience. Prior to working for the county, he was the code services manager for the Centre Region Council of Governments and for 14 years worked for College Township in a variety of roles, including management analyst, according to a release.

Franek will begin in the new role on May 9. His salary was approved at $123,198.
