A Millheim borough council member plans to run for a county-wide seat in the 2023 municipal election.

Robert Zeigler, a Democrat, will seek election to the Centre County recorder of deeds office, according to a press release.

The recorder of deeds leads a staff of five and, the office’s website says, is primarily responsible for recording, protecting, preserving and reproducing legal documents related to real estate. The recorder’s office also handles real estate transfer taxes.

Zeigler hopes to bring a “fresh perspective” to the office, the release states.

“The people of Centre County know that we need to get solutions to the issues we face today and to be proactive in addressing the issues of tomorrow. I consider this position to not be a political one, but rather one to conduct true public service,” Zeigler said. “Just as I have worked to get Millheim moving forward and being a leader in the county regarding broadband access, developing solar energy, and supporting working families, I pledge to do the same in Centre County Government.”

Zeigler recently ran for a seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives against state Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, R-Bellefonte. Looking ahead at this campaign, he said he wants to remove politics from it, noting that he heard some commonalities among voters, regardless of political affiliation, during his last campaign.

“One of them was just doing the work and doing it well. Another main concern was to ensure working folks would be taken care of properly so they can focus on thriving at their jobs and in their lives, not just surviving,” he said. “I believe in terms of local governance, I’ve done a great job of maintaining a strong focus on solutions and good governance. We can be and should be proactive, be able to streamline processes to save taxpayers time and money, and work to build for a better tomorrow.”

As of Tuesday, no other Democrat has declared for this office. On Sunday, Republican and incumbent Joe Davidson announced that he will seek reelection to the county office.

The primary election is May 16.
