Former PA House candidate announces campaign for Centre County treasurer

State College borough resident and former Pennsylvania House candidate Justin Behrens is seeking a county-wide seat.

Behrens, a Republican, is running for Centre County treasurer, according to a press release on Monday, which states he’s “no stranger to public service,” as he’s served in the United States Army and is a nonprofit executive.

“Serving the people of Centre County is something that I don’t take lightly. Times like this the people of Centre County deserve someone that will work together with other elected officials to do what is right for the people of Centre County,” Behrens said in the release.

The county treasurer’s office receives and disburses county money as advised by the county controller and the county commissioners, and distributes payroll checks to about 550 employees on a biweekly basis, according to the county website. Among other responsibilities, the office also acts as an agent of the state in the sale of hunting, fishing and dog licenses and sportsman’s firearm permits. If elected, he will ensure the office “works effortlessly” on customer service for items such as hunting, fishing and dog licenses, according to the release.

“The citizens of Centre County deserve a Treasurer’s office that works efficiently and for the people. Working as a successful business executive, I plan to work effortlessly to be a good steward of the taxpayer’s money and ensure that the office does what it needs to do in a timely and efficient manner,” Behrens said in the release.

Behrens is a husband and has two sons. He recently ran for a seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives against Paul Takac, D-College Township.

As of Monday, no other Republican has declared for this office. Earlier this month, Democrat and incumbent Colleen Kennedy announced that she will seek reelection to the county office.

The primary election is May 16 and municipal election is Nov. 7.
