Voter registration deadline approaching

With Election Day just five weeks away, the deadline to register for new voters is coming up.

Oct. 11 is the last day to register to vote in the general election on Nov. 8.

New voters can register online through the Pennsylvania Department of State’s website or by mailing or dropping off a voter registration application to the Centre County Elections and Voter Registration Office in the Willowbank Building, located at 420 Holmes St. in Bellefonte.

The registration form is also used to change a voter’s registered name, address and/or party affiliation.

Historically, voter registration is higher in presidential election years because of new students and on-campus registration drives at Penn State, said Joyce McKinley, director of the Centre County elections office.

Quite a few new registrations are from residents this year as well, she said.

At the close of the primary in April, Centre County had 109,701 registered voters, McKinley said. As of Tuesday, that number had grown to 118,033.

But McKinley said there are still a lot more voter registrations to be processed.

Voters will receive confirmation of their registration by mail, which will also include their polling places, McKinley said.
