National Voter Registration Day, which marks its 10th anniversary Tuesday, has registered almost 4.7 million Americans over the years. The holiday brings together volunteers and organizations from across the U.S. in a coordinated effort to spread the word about voter registration.

“National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote,” organizers say.

In Pennsylvania, residents have about a month to register to vote in November’s highly watched general election. Races on the ballot include governor, U.S. senator, U.S. representative and state representative. Half of the state Senate is also up for election, though that position won’t be on Centre County ballots this year.

When is Pennsylvania’s voter registration deadline?

Monday, Oct. 24, is the last day to register in Pennsylvania for the Tuesday, Nov. 8, general election. Voters must be registered at least 15 days before the election.

  • Online at vote.pa.gov/Register. You’ll need your Pennsylvania driver’s license or Pennsylvania Department of Transportation ID card (if you have one) to complete the application

  • By mail
  • At your county’s voter registration office
  • At PennDOT photo or driver’s licenses centers when you get or update your license, and many state government offices, including those that provide public assistance, county mental health/intellectual disabilities offices, area agencies on aging and county clerk of orphans’ court offices

How many registered voters are in Centre County?

As of Monday, there are 105,644 registered voters, according to the county elections website. Registered Democrats have a slight edge at 44,319 voters (41.95%) to 42,360 (40.10%) registered Republicans in the county.

The next highest voter category is “no affiliation,” which has 14,379 people and includes 13.61% of Centre County voters.

How many people have registered to vote in Pennsylvania?

As of Sept. 12, there are about 8.8 million registered voters, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State. There are about 4 million Democrats (45.7% of the total) compared to about 3.5 million Republicans (39.5%). The remaining voters are categorized as “no affiliation” and “other.”

Statewide, the largest percentage of voters are in the 55 to 64 age group (18%), followed closely by 25 to 34 (17%) and then 35 to 44 (16%). Centre County skews younger, with the highest percentage of its voters (23.9%) in the 25 to 34 age group.
