Notice more people in State College? What to know about social distancing violations
Eased COVID-19 mitigation efforts, warmer weather and an upcoming federal holiday has led people to steadily and gradually return to Happy Valley.
The State College Police Department and the borough’s Ordinance Enforcement Department each reported increased activity the past two weeks throughout the borough, interim Mayor Ron Filippelli said Monday in his video address.
Both departments reported an increase in COVID-19-related responses, including telephone calls from the public and proactive enforcement, Filippelli said.
The increase may have been temporary, as many graduating Penn State seniors returned for photos at various landmarks, Lt. Greg Brauser said Thursday.
“I’m sure you’ve noticed an increase in population in the borough ... as more people come back. It’s very important to fulfill the requirements of the governor’s orders,” Filippelli said. “... We will continue to respond to calls and proactively patrol to address gatherings, noise and other issues.”
Violations can be reported by calling 800-479-0050. Residents should not call 911 to report social distancing violations.
Gatherings of up to 25 people are permitted in the “yellow stage” of Gov. Tom Wolf’s reopening plan, which Centre County has been in since May 8.
Police officers have “consistently” responded to reports of social distancing violations, and all are handled the same way, Brauser said last week.
Charges could be filed if people are unwilling to comply with police requests, but that “has not occurred with any incident thus far,” Brauser said.
When should you wear a mask?
There has also been “some confusion” about when and where masks should be worn, Filippelli said.
Masks should be worn when:
- Shopping
- Visiting a health care provider
- Using public transportation
- Employees interact with customers
- Feeling sick
Masks are not required when outdoors, but are encouraged, Filippelli said.
