Special Reports

Meet John Doe, From Utah

I’ll be doing a blog on the recent court proceedings later, but we’ve had some other news that has set the Internet abuzz.  Has a live Ray Gricar been found, alive, in Utah?

Press reports are circulating of a man that arrested on July 1 of this year by the Provo, UT, police.  The man’s name is, ah, well, unknown.  He’s refused to give it, so he’s being held by the Sheriff's Office there: they are calling him “John Doe.”  His prints didn’t come up a criminal database, and the police think he’s from out of state. They also describe him as “well-spoken and educated.1 The Sheriff's Office also said that he acts like he’s never been in jail before.2  While incarcerated, he has let his beard grow, but when booked, he only had a mustache.  Here is his booking photo:  http://www.utahcountyonline.org/Dept/Sheriff/Corrections/InmateDetail.asp?id=263092

            Mr. Gricar?

No pun intended, looking at that photo, I said that this is a dead ringer for the missing and presumed dead former Centre County District Attorney.  The age, out of state origin, first time in jail (as an inmate) and being “well-spoken and educated” certainly match.  That the man would choose not to identify himself certainly seems like someone who does not want to be found.  There are some notable differences.

John Doe’s height is listed at 6’ 2.”  Mr. Gricar was six foot even, according to the flyers.  John Doe’s eyes are blue.  Mr. Gricar’s eyes are green.  It makes me think that this probably is not Mr. Gricar, unless the information is incorrect.  I’d still want to run the John Doe’s prints, however.

Of course, if it is Mr. Gricar, and he got taller, his friend and fellow District Attorney Robert W. Buehner, Jr. will never be able to beat him at volleyball.

Late development:  You can change "probably is not Mr. Gricar" to "definitely is not Mr. Gricar."  The John Doe has been identified as Phillip T. Beavers, of New Mexico.  The first public disclosure of this came from the current Centre County District Attorney, Stacy Parks Miller.  The District Attorney's Office is still investigating the case, and looking at all possibilities.
