State College named No. 1 pet-friendly PA travel site. Where are the best spots for dogs?
Motel 6 and travel site BestPlaces released a list March 31 ranking the top cities in each state for pet-friendly travel in the U.S.
The ranking named State College as the top choice in Pennsylvania.
Selection criteria included access to dog parks, hiking trails and grassy areas, as well as proximity to veterinarians, pet stores and dog-friendly patios.
So what does State College offer pets and their owners? We’ve rounded up some things to do, places to stay and veterinarians in case you run into trouble.
Where can I take my dog in State College?
Tudek Dog Park is located at 425 Park Crest Lane and open from dawn to dusk. There are two separate areas for dogs weighing less or more than 30 pounds. Dogs are free to run off leash, and there is currently a research study being conducted onsite. Owners can opt their dogs into the study on a volunteer basis, and participating dogs can enjoy cognitive games.
Wiscoy Pet Food Co. is located at 424 West Aaron Drive. It carries food for dogs, cats, birds, horses and more. In August, you can bring your dog to the store every Friday for an evening ice cream social. The store also hosts Easter egg hunts and “Treats for Tricks” events for dogs.
The Pet Pub is a local boutique offering a shop, grooming salon and a self-service grooming room. It is located at 507 Benner Pike, and salon appointments can be made online.
Bellefonte Central Rail Trail runs 1.3 miles through Centre County. It lies on a rail line built in the 1880s, which originally stretched 19 miles.
Lodging
Graduate State College is located one block from Penn State, and you can bring your pet there for $35 per night.
The Queen bed and breakfast is in Bellefonte. Pets are allowed in some of the suites, and there is a $25 pet fee.
Animal hospitals
Mt. Nittany Veterinary Hospital is located at 200 Elmwood St. and offers full-service care, including dentistry, nutrition, microchipping, radiography and surgery.
Centre Animal Hospital is another full-service vet office, located at 1518 West College Ave. Along with its in-person care, the hospital also offers an online pharmacy program.
Animal Medical Hospital provides traditional veterinary services, as well as behavioral medicine therapy, which is designed to relieve fear, anxiety, aggression and cognitive dysfunction in dogs.
