Health insurance, utilities cost more in State College than US average, report says
State College residents spend an average of 43% of the city’s median household income on monthly bills, according to one analysis by an online bill-paying service.
The average Pennsylvania resident spends $1,851 per month on bills, according to the report by doxoINSIGHTS, compared to a U.S. average cost of roughly $2,002.67.
The most expensive average monthly bills across the U.S. include rent and mortgage payments, as well as automotive loans and utility payments.

The median monthly household income in State College is $3,173, the U.S. Census Bureau reports. The census income data represents the median income from 2016 to 2020, expressed in 2020 dollars.
The average cost of rent, auto loans and auto insurance is lower in State College than the national mean, but mortgages, utilities and health insurance cost more locally, according to the report.
