TikTok trend encourages thefts of Kia, Hyundai vehicles, PA attorney general warns
A social media trend is sparking thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles, Pennsylvania’s attorney general recently warned residents.
Attorney General Michelle Henry said last week that a TikTok challenge calls on viewers to steal a Kia or Hyundai by using household items. The vehicles don’t have software that would block the cars from starting without a key, making them vulnerable to potential thefts.
The automakers have been issuing software updates that solve this issue, and many vehicles should have the update by June, Henry said. Consumers may have to bring their car to a dealership for the update.
The affected vehicles include 2017-20 Elantras, 2015-19 Sonatas and 2020-21 Venues. Hyundai and Kia have joined with law enforcement agencies to offer free steering wheel locks for those affected. Drivers should contact local law enforcement to see if they’re eligible, Henry said.
“Social media has opened so many doors and opportunities for information-sharing,” Henry said in a press release. “Unfortunately, not all of those opportunities serve a positive purpose, so consumers should be aware of trends that leave them vulnerable to crime. I am thankful that Hyundai and Kia are already releasing the software corrections for these vehicles and for their partnership with local law enforcement to give consumers free steering wheel locks.”
Car owners can contact Hyundai at 800-633-5151 and Kia at 800-333-4542 for more details about the software update.
