Not one, but three winning Powerball tickets sold in PA expire soon. They are worth $1.25M

Did you play the Powerball last fall? You might be eligible to claim a hefty sum before time runs out.

Three winning Powerball tickets worth a combined $1.25 million will expire this fall, the Pennsylvania Lottery said in a press release Wednesday. The tickets, all sold in early October 2023, will lapse once a year passes.

All three winning tickets were sold during a historic Powerball jackpot run that culminated with a $1.76 billion jackpot-winning ticket sold in California. Pennsylvania players combined for at least 40.1 million Powerball plays and at least $85.1 million in total sales during that October craze, lottery officials said Oct. 4, 2023.

Here’s what you should know about the winning tickets expiring soon in Pennsylvania:

  • A winning ticket worth $1 million matched all five white balls drawn Oct. 4, 2023: 9, 35, 54, 63 and 64. United Food Market, located at 500 E. Walnut Lane in Philadelphia, sold the winning ticket.
  • A winning ticket worth $150,000 matched four of the five white balls drawn Oct. 9, 2023: 16, 34, 46, 55 and 67, plus the red Powerball of 14. Blose’s Market, located at 7070 Route 309 in New Tripoli in Lehigh County, sold the unclaimed ticket.
  • A winning ticket worth $100,000 matched four of the five white balls drawn Oct. 4, 2023: 9, 35, 54, 63 and 64, plus the red Powerball of 1. The ticket’s $1 Power Play option doubled the winnings up from $50,000. Rite Aid, located at 209 Atwood St. in Pittsburgh, sold the winning ticket.

Under Pennsylvania law, winners can claim lottery prizes on any business day for up to a year after each drawing.

“By law, unclaimed, expired lottery prizes remain in the Lottery Fund and are used to support programs benefiting older Pennsylvanians,” the state lottery wrote in a media release.

Those hoping to claim a winning lottery ticket should sign the back of their ticket and call the state lottery at 1-800-692-7481, fill out an online claim form or visit one of the commonwealth’s seven lottery offices, which are open to the public between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Powerball players are tasked with correctly picking five numbers between one and 69, plus a red Powerball between one and 26.

Players have an overall 1 in 24.87 chance of winning a prize of any size on a given Powerball ticket, according to the game’s official rules. However, the odds of correctly selecting a drawing’s five white balls to win a $1 million prize are roughly 1 in 11.69 million.

Players in Pennsylvania can take several steps to limit their gambling. The state lottery recommends setting budgets online, scheduling cool-off periods or self-excluding from online games, among other strategies.
