Let’s say the bygone Lenten season put you in a fishy mood. A popular food site has decreed “The Hands Down Best” fish sandwiches in each state.

In Pennsylvania that sandwich is served by Wholey’s Fish Market in Pittsburgh. The publication, Mashed, wrote it determined which was the best by “scouring the internet for reviews.” The establishment has consistently good reviews on Google.

Wholey’s Fish Market, formally Robert Wholey Co., is best known for the Wholey Whaler, according to Mashed. The sandwich is a pound of hand-dipped whiting on a baked bun from Mancini’s Bakery. The Whaler retails for $12.

“The Holy Moley sandwich is another favorite, featuring a pound of Icelandic cod,” Mashed wrote. That sandwich goes for $20.25.

“Fish market” is a bit of a misnomer, as Wholey’s sells everything from soup to spices to rabbit meat. The spot even ships to all 50 states.

“Wholey’s Fish Market in Pittsburgh’s Strip District has been in operation since 1912, making it a long-standing local institution,” Mashed wrote.

For those looking to satisfy their fish sandwich cravings in Centre County, users on popular review site Yelp recommend The Field Burger & Tap and Olde New York, both in State College.

The Centre Daily Times reached out to Wholey’s for comment.
