National Weather Service warns of potential flooding in parts of Centre County after heavy rain
Heavy rain may cause minor flooding Friday in parts of southeastern Centre County, the National Weather Service said.
More than two inches of rain are expected in Woodward, Boalsburg, Centre Hall, Millheim, Ramblewood, Aaronsburg, Rebersburg, Spring Mills, Madisonburg and Whipple Dam State Park, according to a flood advisory issued about 11 a.m. by the NWS.
The advisory is scheduled to expire 2 p.m. Friday.
Parts of southern Centre County were also placed under flash flood watch until 2 a.m. Saturday. Thunderstorms that developed over much of central Pennsylvania could produce “very heavy” rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, the NWS said.
At least some rain is needed in all of Centre County. The northern part of the county is abnormally dry, while the southern part of the county is experiencing a moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
In a moderate drought, specialty crop yield and size is affected, air quality is poor and trees are brittle and susceptible to insects.
Pennsylvania’s average temperature in July was 74.9 degrees, which tied for the warmest July on record. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been tracking Pennsylvania’s average monthly temperature since 1895.
The average temperature was 4.5 degree above average, according to NOAA.
