Snow emergencies, closures and more: Here’s what’s happening in Centre County

Winter isn’t over in Centre County, with as much as 7 inches of snow expected Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning through 5 p.m. Saturday. The snow will be heaviest from 5 a.m. to noon, the alert states.

In anticipation of the snowstorm, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and local municipalities began to announce preparations on Friday.

Below is a look at what’s happening across the county.

What to know about roadways

  • PennDOT implemented vehicle restrictions on some roadways starting at 5 a.m. Saturday. This includes Tier 3 restrictions for the entire length of Interstate 99, and Interstate 80 from Interstate 79 to I-99. Under Tier 3, most commercial vehicles are not permitted.
  • State Route 350 was shut down due to hazardous conditions Saturday morning.

“PennDOT urges motorists to avoid travel if possible. If travel is necessary, use caution, reduce speeds and be aware of changing weather conditions,” a release stated.

Snow emergencies

Patton, Harris and College townships have declared snow emergencies effective 7 a.m. Saturday.

All vehicles must be removed from township streets and residents must clear sideways within 24 hours of snow stopping.

Cancellations and delays

  • On-campus work and most in-person activities at Penn State’s University Park campus will be canceled from 5 a.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Sunday. Intercollegiate Athletics and Bryce Jordan Center events on Saturday will be held as scheduled. In a news release, the university encouraged students returning from spring break to postpone their arrival to Sunday.

  • SAT testing scheduled for Saturday at State High has been postponed, with a make-up date tentatively set for March 26. The College Board will email registered students directly with details.
  • Nittany Mall will delay Saturday’s opening until 1 p.m.
  • Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania plans to open at noon Saturday and will post further delays on social media.
  • Schlow Centre Region Library announced it will not open until at least 1 p.m. Saturday.
  • All branches of the Centre County Library & Historical Museum are closed Saturday.
