First snowfall in Centre County causes closures, crashes, messy road conditions
Centre County had its first real snowfall of the season on Tuesday afternoon, causing messy roads and crashes throughout the area.
With a winter weather advisory in place through 5 a.m. Wednesday, 1 to 3 inches of snow are predicted, with freezing rain Tuesday night into a drizzle early Wednesday morning. As of late Tuesday afternoon, roads were already being affected by the snow, with reduced speeds and road closures.
- PennDOT lowered the speed limit on Interstate 99 to 45 mph.
- The speed limit was reduced to 45 mph on U.S. 322 westbound between Burnham/Yeagertown and Innovation Park.
- At about 4 p.m., state Route 350 at Sandy Ridge Summit was closed due to icy conditions, according to a Facebook post from Mountain Top Fire Company. After it reopened, the fire company still urged drivers to travel cautiously.
- U.S. Route 322 was closed between Boalsburg and Potters Mills, Boalsburg Fire Company posted on Facebook. It reopened at about 6:40 p.m.
Several schools canceled Tuesday afternoon activities, but none have announced delays or snow days for Wednesday yet. Bellefonte Area School District postponed its board meeting until Friday night and canceled any after-school activities due to the weather.
Philipsburg-Osceola and Bald Eagle area school districts canceled all after-school activities as well, with State College Area School District suspending any activities after 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Lady Mounties volleyball PIAA semi-final game that was scheduled for Tuesday has been moved to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Penns Valley Area School District has not posted about cancellations for any activities or events.
