Live updates: Penn State, Centre County schools closed Thursday due to winter storm

Centre County municipalities, schools and businesses began preparing Wednesday for a winter storm that’s expected to bring as much as 8 inches of snow and sleet accumulations to the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning, upgrading from an earlier winter storm watch, for central Pennsylvania, warning of hazardous travel conditions. The warning is in effect through Friday morning.

The snow, freezing rain and sleet Thursday morning is expected to turn to snow after noon, according to the NWS.

On Wednesday evening, Penn State announced that the University Park campus will be closed from 4 a.m. Thursday through 5 a.m. Friday. Final exams have been rescheduled for Friday and some for Saturday morning.

State College Area School District and Young Scholars Charter School announced Wednesday afternoon that schools would be closed for the storm. Bald Eagle, Bellefonte, Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola area school districts will have flexible instruction days with no in-person classes.

Patton Township police issued a snow emergency for Thursday, with all cars needing to be off the streets until the storm has ended. A snow emergency was also issued in Harris Township, effective noon Thursday. Vehicles must be removed from public streets prior to 3 p.m.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced a number of restrictions on roadways and urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel.

  • Schlow Centre Region Library is closed Thursday.
  • All Centre County Library locations are closed Thursday.
  • The Centre County United Way’s Taste of the Town fundraiser will not be held Thursday.
