State College-area residents may be in for a particularly hot summer this year, according to an outlook from the National Weather Service and a prediction from the Farmers’ Almanac.

Most of Pennsylvania has a 40% to 50% likelihood of above-normal temperatures from May to July, according to the NWS Climate Prediction Center, but an eastern sliver of the state has about a 50% to 60% chance.

Some parts of the commonwealth could experience more rain than usual, as well. Southern Pennsylvania residents have a 33% to 40% chance of above-normal precipitation from May to July, the NWS reports, while the northern region has equal chances of below- or above-average precipitation.

Here’s what to know about summer weather in Central Pennsylvania for 2023, including a prediction from the Farmers’ Almanac and data from the NWS.

Farmers’ Almanac summer prediction

The Farmers’ Almanac warns of “sizzling temperatures” across the U.S. this summer, plus storms and high humidity in some areas.

Pennsylvania will be “scorching” and “dry” this summer, the almanac predicts. The nation will experience stormy weather in June, according to the outlook, and storms will be more common in areas east of the Mississippi River.

The almanac makes predictions based on a mysterious formula that considers factors such as planetary positioning, sunspot activity and tidal action of the moon.

“The only person who knows the exact formula is the Farmers’ Almanac weather prognosticator who goes by the pseudonym of Caleb Weatherbee,” the organization’s website says. “To protect this proprietary formula, the editors of the Farmers’ Almanac prefer to keep both Caleb’s true identity and the formula a closely guarded brand secret.”

The Farmers’ Almanac has provided extended forecasts since 1818, according to its website.
