Centre County schools closed as winter storm brings heavy snow for morning commute
Centre County schools are closed Monday as a major winter storm affecting millions across the United States moves east.
Heavy snow started early Monday morning and could bring 2-4 inches throughout the day, with much of the accumulation happening before noon. In a special weather statement, the National Weather Service State College wrote that the heavier snow showers in the morning will bring hazardous travel conditions.
“Multiple bands of locally heavy snow showers will bring quick accumulations, covering roadways and bringing rapidly changing visibilities for the morning commute,” the statement reads. “Snowfall accumulations are expected to be one inch or less; however, the bulk of that accumulation will come in under an hour.”
All local schools reacted to the predicted morning travel problems by keeping students home. State College and Bellefonte area school districts are closed while Bald Eagle and Penns Valley area students have a Flexible Instruction Day and Philipsburg-Osceola students have a remote instruction day.
The NWS warned that major roadways such as Interstates 80 and 90 could be hazardous Monday morning and snow-covered secondary roadways could lead to an increased risk in accidents.
“Please use extreme caution and allow plenty of stopping distance,” the special weather statement reads.
No winter storm watches or warnings have been issued for Centre County, but millions of others in the Midwest and East are under winter weather advisories as a major storm covers 13 states and moves east with a mix of snow and ice.
