At least two Centre County schools will have an early dismissal Wednesday due to the forecast, which has put some of central Pennsylvania, including Centre County, under a winter weather advisory.

The Bald Eagle Area School District said it will dismiss school one hour early on Wednesday (elementary school at 2:05 p.m. and secondary at 2:10 p.m.), and will cancel all after-school activities due to the timing of the predicted ice and snow. State College Area School District will also dismiss one hour early (elementary at 2 p.m. and secondary at 2:40 p.m.). After-school activities and CEEL are canceled, as well.

The National Weather Service said a winter weather advisory is in effect beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday. The advisory states mixed precipitation is expected, with total snow and sleet accumulation is up to one inch and up to one tenth of an inch of ice accumulation.

David Martin, a forecaster at NWS State College, said the area will start to see light, patchy snow Wednesday afternoon. But as it gets closer to the evening, the snow will become more widespread with sleet becoming more predominant overnight and some freezing rain mixed in, he said. Temperatures will be near freezing overnight.

The advisory states people should plan on “slippery road conditions,” as the conditions could impact the Wednesday evening commute. In a post on the social media platform X, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation urged people to avoid unnecessary travel but to use extra caution, especially on bridged and ramps, and to increase following distance and avoid sudden maneuvers if they do need to go out.

Thursday will see the “rain tapering off in the morning,” and it will be breezy with temperatures pushing the upper 30s, Martin said.
