Winter weather advisory issued for Centre County this weekend with snow, ice expected
Another batch of winter weather is headed for Centre County, with a winter weather advisory issued for the weekend.
The National Weather Service’s winter weather advisory for parts of central Pennsylvania, including Centre County, is set to take effect beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and is through 9 a.m. Sunday. The advisory states mixed precipitation is expected — one to three inches of snow and sleet, alongside ice accumulations of up to a quarter of an inch.
According to Accuweather’s forecast, snow is expected in State College from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, with periods of sleet and freezing rain to follow. Accuweather warned of “dangerous travel with reduced visibility and slippery roads.”
The precipitation is expected to turn to rain by the time the winter weather advisory ends on Sunday, which will be warmer with a high of 46 degrees Fahrenheit.
The NWS’ advisory urges drivers to “slow down and use caution when traveling” Saturday.
Ahead of the expected weather, Patton Township issued a snow emergency Friday that will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and last until the hazardous weather conditions subside. In its announcement, the township reminded residents to not park along the road during the emergency so that plow trucks can “safely clear the entire width of the roadway.”
Residents were also reminded that they must clear the entire width of any sidewalks within 24 hours of the precipitation’s end.
Harris and College township each issued a snow emergency that will start at 8 a.m. Saturday.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is also preparing for anticipated winter weather across much of the state Saturday. Starting at noon Saturday, Tier 1 restrictions — which prohibit vehicles including buses, tractors without trailers, passenger vehicles towing trailers and more — will take effect on the entire length of Interstate 99.
