Tornado warning expires for southeastern Centre County after storm rolls through area

A tornado warning was issued Monday evening for part of Centre County as strong storms rolled through the area.

The warning was in effect through 9:15 p.m. for the southeastern part of the county, including Boalsburg, Millhiem and Woodward. According to the alert from the National Weather Service, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Boalsburg, moving northeast at 30 mph, at 8:42 p.m.

“Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter,” the alert stated. “Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.”

The alert advised those in the affected area to take cover by moving to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

In addition to the tornado warning, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Centre County through midnight.

What is a tornado watch?

A tornado watch means a tornado is possible in or near the area. A watch generally covers a large area, likely multiple counties or even states, the weather service said. This is the time to be prepared and “review and discuss your emergency plans and check supplies and your safe room,” the NWS said.

A tornado warning indicates a tornado has been seen or indicated by radar and there is imminent danger to life or property, the NWS said. Residents should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows. Those in a mobile home, vehicle or who are outdoors should find shelter and protect themselves from flying debris, the NWS said.
